Learn how to create purposeful shadows using bold, expressive color. This process-focused approach helps artists better understand light, dark, and value while creating a dynamic negative painting effect.
Students will work on MASA paper, exploring a technique similar to batik—without the use of hot wax. The painted MASA paper is then adhered to watercolor paper using GOLDEN Soft Gel, creating surprising textures and luminous layers. Watching the paint fade and reveal the background is part of the magic of this process.
This is a fun and exciting way to experiment with materials while discovering new ways to see and paint shadows. No previous experience is needed—just a willingness to play and explore.
